Opinion: A New G. I. Bill
Whether or not you agree that Sen. James Webb is a good writer – which he is – or a good senator – verdict’s still out – there should be strong agreement on his proposal to upgrade the G.I. Bill of Rights.
Briefly, he wants expanded and improved benefits for American soldiers who have been through combat since Sept. 11, 2001.
This is such a good idea it’s a wonder no one ever suggested it before.
Sen. Webb has introduced a bill that would provide college tuition, room and board plus $1,000 a month stipend to veterans who have served at least two years’ active duty since the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
With the huge increase in college tuition and expenses, the current benefits under the G.I. Bill do not adequately cover educational expenses. Currently, an enrolled veteran can receive only about $38,000 during a four-year college tenure. However, the College Board reports that the average cost of one year in a public college is close to $12,700. Clearly, adjustments are needed to veteran benefits.
Government benefits should be given out sparingly but certainly the young men and women who volunteered to serve their nation in time of war deserve the nation’s best. They should have their college expenses covered by the government, as part of the thanks from a grateful nation.
